The Synopsis:
Madeline is an 18-year-old who has never stepped outside of her house because she’s allergic to the world – literally. Suffering from severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) disease, exposure to unfamiliar objects, or even the air outside her house could potentially kill her. She’s completely fine being confined within the walls of her house until a new family moves into the house next door.
The Review:
It’s a gripping book that you can finish in one sitting.
- Although wise beyond her years due to all the books she’s read throughout her life, the main character is still a regular teenage girl wanting to fall in love and go on adventures. Probably more so than others, as she’s never even seen her front lawn.
- Madeline narrates her story, not as someone who has succumbed to her illness but also as a young girl who still hopes her uneventful life becomes something more.
- Overall, the characters are written well. They’re flawed in their way but likable nonetheless. Although it becomes a bit cliché as it progresses, the story is compelling with a few twists here and there. It’s easy to get engrossed within a few chapters, especially with the quirky writing style. It does get a tad unrealistic here and there, but that’s what fiction is.
- Towards the end, we come across a shocking development (some may not agree) that completely changes the narrative, and that’s what makes the book so good.
- The author poses some excellent questions to her readers in a smooth and lighthearted manner and, frankly, makes us feel grateful for things we usually take for granted, like being able to step out of the house without a thought. With some powerful, thought-provoking quotes and amusing characters with cute interactions, this book is worth reading, especially if you’re a fan of YA stories.
- A word of advice: don’t overthink while reading it and just let yourself get lost in the story.
