The Kerala Story is the movie that has been in the columns for the last few months nationwide. Claiming to be “based on real incidents”, many argue this movie to be a political propaganda film. Undoubtedly the announcement of this movie’s release left the country divided over the real intentions of the movie and its makers.

Released on 5th May 2023, this film has received mixed responses from the audience. While some states banned the film, a significant part of the audience appreciated the film for portraying some “eye-opening incidents” taking place in the country, especially in Kerala. Despite so much happening around the film, one might question whether this film is worth watching or not. Though it’s completely a matter of choice, today we are bringing some facts and realities from The Kerala Story.

The Kerala Story Movie Review: Is The Controversial Movie Worth Watching Or Not?

The Kerala Story Movie Review

The Kerala Story movie

The controversy began right from the day of its announcement. After launching the trailer for The Kerala Story movie, the viewers strongly discouraged it for stating wrong facts. The trailer summed up this film as a tale of 3 girls in Kerala who were converted to Islam and eventually recruited by the terrorist organisation ISIS. Director Sudipto Sen claimed this movie to be the story of 32000 girls from Kerala recruited for ISIS. This fact itself was incorrect as per the Government report, and soon the makers altered it from 32000 to 3 girls.

However, barring all the political complexities, the film appeared to offer something different when it came to the cast and production of the movie.

Bholaa Movie Review: Unleashing The Rudra Avatar

The Kerala Story movie

The film encapsulates the lives of 3 young nursing students persuaded to adopt the Islamic faith by their roommate, Asifa, who was clandestine for ISIS. The complete story is retold by the protagonist, Shalini, also called Fatima, as she is interrogated by the police officials. Through her perspective, the makers have tried to portray the movie.

Asifa, being the Muslim character, is shown negatively as she brainwashes her friends to change their beliefs. She and her male associates trap the girls in romantic liaisons and persuasively convert them to Islam. This episode in The Kerala Story movie has raised questions, particularly for portraying the girls as unaware and alluring, and has promoted the concept of Love-Jihad. Belonging to a multi-faith state, the characters being ignorant of other religious practices substantiated a very loose storyline.

The Kerala Story movie

Throughout the film, the ideas of radicalisation are shown in a very shady and incomplete manner. The “true incidents” that the movie claims to represent have become fragmentary and drastic. The storyline has been written vaguely and lacks the expected maturity while portraying something as sensitive as this issue. Though from the first look, actress Adah Sharma playing Shalini looked promising with her craft. However, her performance couldn’t enhance the storyline. Supporting characters played by Siddhi Idnani, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Pranay Pachauri have tried their best to portray their respective characters, but that didn’t help the film much.

The cinematography and screenplay though gripping in some instances, couldn’t keep the audience captivated throughout. Some scenes have felt to be dreary and questionable in the film. The shots capturing the hard and anguished life in Afghanistan have been intriguing and can be said to be the only successful scenes in The Kerala Story movie that has delivered its anticipation.

The film would have been much better if it had portrayed the case from other diverse and intriguing perspectives. The film feels to be more of an extremist idea than a source of entertainment that has been brutal and unjustified to some communities of India. Despite being a movie with an incomplete storyline, amateurish screenplay and obscure production, a major part of its viewer have not only enjoyed but also believed in the facts of The Kerala Story.

The Kerala Story movie

As a report by MoJo Story and Brut India, almost every viewer interviewed is seen to be appreciating the makers of The Kerala Story. However, the facts presented are not completely true and have seemed to be altered to propagate certain disruptive ideas in society. This case is true for only 3 girls across Kerala and not more than 30,000 women. As per the US State Department reports of 2021, ISIS had recruited 6 women from India, of which only 3 were converted to Islam from Christianity and Hinduism.

Moreover, the rate of forced conversions has been much less in reality than claimed and portrayed in the movie. When the makers of The Kerala Story were asked to provide evidence supporting their claims, they presented some manipulated facts initially and later completely ignored the questions raised. Barring all these political and unjustified controversies, The Kerala Story movie has not showcased the cinematic excellence that it could have.

The Kerala Story movie

Though its box office collections highlight a different picture, this movie has faced some of the strongest critiques from critics and decent viewers. Had the makers of The Kerala Story presented the complete truth compellingly and transparently, this movie could have been a splendid and captivating film. Considering the current scenario of the nation, it is immensely sad to see a film like The Kerala Story providing an unsettling and polarising brunt on the minds of the country.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: Sci-Fi Rom-Com Which Can Be Skipped

The movie Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya follows the life of Aryan Agnihotri, played by Shahid Kapoor, a robotics’ engineer who falls in love with his aunt’s assistant, Sifra, only to find out later that she is a robot. What happens later forms the premise of Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, where Aryan and Sifra navigate their way to make the relationship work. While the idea of a human-robot relationship in an Indian film may seem new, the film is nothing but an attempt to test your patience and sell you what has already been sold to you before, but in a different package.

The pitch of the film is incredibly bland and loud; it tries to present itself as a “no-brainer,” but what the duo of Amit Joshi and Aradhana forgot to add to the memo was the fact that no-brainer films are, at the very least, entertaining. This film comes nowhere close to that. Keep reading the Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya movie review.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: The flaws in the flow

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya' review: Overemployed android | Mint Lounge

The writing of the film is all over the place, the screenplay of the film is incredibly confused, the dialogues include the likes of “Dhumrapan nahi isse sutta maarna kehte hain,” the characters are mostly like caricatures, and the first half of the film is incredibly dull and boring; it’s almost like an extended T-Series music video.

The idea had a lot of potential on paper and has been captured very effectively in films like Her, but the themes of this film are incredibly half-baked. As an audience, you cannot care enough about Aryan and Sifra; it fails to engage you in any way. The shifts in the screenplay are too abrupt and frequent, which throws you off, starting from a breezy beach romance to the pair accepting their situation to random incidents happening along the way that have no significance to the plot or the screenplay to a comedy of errors in the family. The film is incredibly confused about what it wants to portray itself as.

The climax had a lot of potential and could have been the saving grace as far as the writing is concerned. The ideas and troupes could have been interesting, and they would have elevated the screenplay, but the disjointed writing of the film sticks out like a sore thumb and restrains it from thriving.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: Performances

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya film review: Simplistic sci-fi with some winning humour

Perhaps the only aspect that can engage you as a viewer is the performance of the film. The chemistry between Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon works well for the film.

Shahid Kapoor has done a commendable job with the role; he is whacky and tries to do his best with the half-baked character and the cringey dialogues. Kriti Sanon is the standout from the cast, as she beautifully balances the complexities of their dynamic. She had a lot of potential in this role and could have done even better if the writing of the character had more potential, which sadly isn’t the case.

Ashish Verma as Shahid Kapoor’s best friend Monty, has also played his role incredibly well and steals every scene he features in. He has a limited screen presence, which also takes away from the film’s overall impact.

The other characters can best be summarised with the fake laugh of Sifra, as they add nothing more than annoyance to the film-watching experience.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: Technical Aspects

The frames of this film can make you go blind (yes, they are that bright). There is nothing new in terms of camerawork; it follows the typical Hindi cinema camera work without any newer element or innovation, which is a wasted opportunity considering the subject of the film. There could have been some form of redemption.

The remake of the title track is terrible. Right from the costumes to the choreography, it just doesn’t work. The steps are awkward, the pairs look uncomfortable while performing, the song has too many cuts, and the costumes are horrendous.

In contradiction to the title track, Laal Peeli Akhiyaan, and Akhiyaan Gulaab is phenomenal. The pair put their best foot forward and do a commendable job in the former, while Shahid Kapoor moves like a dream in the latter and kills it. The choreography in both the songs are both fun and fantastic and has been executed really well.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Movie Review: Conclusion

To conclude, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya could have been a fun and entertaining comedy of errors, consisting of whacky gags and with the presence of a recurring emotional arc, but the film falters terribly in the writing and execution and wastes the talent of brilliant actors, which includes the likes of Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Dimple Kapadia.

Thank You For Coming Movie: The Story and Inspiration

Women-centric movies of today are finally shifting the focus to some of the girl problems as well, which are otherwise largely brushed off and never to be spoken about again. The topic of lack of pleasure faced by women in sexual relationships first started gaining momentum in India with the #OrgasmInequality campaign by the condom brand, Durex.
