Nadaaniyan Movie Review: A Must-Watch Or A Skip?

Yet another month, and we have another star-kid-studded Netflix release—Nadaaniyaan, starring Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor. Curious whether Nadaaniyan lives up to the hype? Read our in-depth Nadaaniyan movie review to find out if this film is a must-watch or just another passable watch. Does it deliver an engaging storyline, strong performances, and emotional depth, or does it fall into the trap of predictability? Let’s break it down!

Nadaaniyan is essentially about a posh South Delhi girl, Pia Jaisingh, who hires a boy of her age to pose as her boyfriend to get back at her upper-class family and friends. The film’s crux is how these two individuals develop feelings towards each other during this charade.

Nadaaniyan Movie Review: The Gap

The biggest problem of a film like Nadaaniyan is something that is quite common to recent films that try to talk about “young romance.” The treatment of the subject is quite dated, and one can clearly see that the writers of the film have a huge gap in their understanding of the younger demographic. These “issues” are what they assume are the problems of the younger generation, which are few and far between from reality.

The core of this film is the family drama between Arjun and Pia’s families. If fleshed out well, it could have been a fantastic coming-of-age entertainer. Sadly, that aspect is left untouched.

Nadaaniyan Movie Review: Misrepresentation

Be it films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham or Student of The Year, the Delhi Troupe has been a hassle regarding representation. However, what sets these films apart from films like Nadaaniyaan or Loveyapa is their strong premise, casting, and the sheer conviction with which they tell their stories.

Off-late, all the films that have Delhi as a backdrop, be it Bad Newz, Mere Husband ki Biwi, Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani, have exhausted their Delhi-plugging. Merely name-dropping places like “CP” or “Noida” or showing the Red Fort or the typical tourist attractions does not do justice to the city or what it represents.

What is even more exhausting is the portrayal of “South Delhi”, where everyone is assumed to be rich; everyone is either a bimbo or has an accent, which adds to the stereotype. Suppose one wants to see an accurate representation. In that case, films like Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, or the Netflix Series Class accurately depict the spirit of South Delhi and the city in general.

Nadaaniyan Movie Review: Performances and Story

While the mature actors of the film, like Dia Mirza, Suniel Shetty, Jugal Hansraj, and Mahima Chaudhary, show a slight glimmer of hope, their scenes with the youngsters, which could have been the only saving grace of this film, are sadly very few and far between.

The entire premise of the film rests on very weak shoulders, and the foundation of the film is very weak, namely, the relationship between the two leads. Both of them are limited in their acting prowess. While Khushi has very expressive facial features and expressions, Ibrahim is entirely wooden in his performance and struggles with even the most basic scenes.

Nadaaniyan Movie Review: Conclusion

Nadaaniyaan is said to be yet another failed attempt to portray the younger generation and their issues. It eventually ends up being a two-hour mess with a weak premise, with the two leads trying to prove their acting chops, failing miserably.
