However, there is an incredible number of things that go wrong in the film starting with the fact that the filmmakers seem to be satisfied to let Reilly and Ferrell’s hysterics stand in the way of any plot logic or sense.

From the beginning of the film, after the first 5 minutes, you might be wondering why exactly Robert and Janet have put up with their man-child sons who are unemployed and stay and ruin their lives for nothing.

But however, if they hadn’t you wouldn’t have a plot for the film which is anyway lacking in it. Director Adam seems extremely satisfied to let Ferrell and Reilly scream, shout and battle their way through every scene assuming that the audience will find their childish verbatim hilarious.

Produced by Judd the stepbrothers has the most raunchy rawness of his other comedies but does not have the sweetness of structure of his other stories.

The step brothers also do feel like more of a marketing film than a movie because there are more posters than plots.

Ferrel repeatedly reiterates his overly familiar buffoon character and Riley parallels him. It’s as if everyone involved in the film was so sure that they while doing comedy gold, did not bother making an effort to create full depth characters or an actual plot.

Instead, however, we do get stars in thin raw lines that are extremely similar to each other without any character development to what we have seen many times before and the story is shifting lazily from one scene to another with really no direction.

The film was released in the theaters on July 25th, 2008. The first DVD or streaming on the OTT platforms was released on December 1, 2008. With the genre of comedy and runtime of 112 minutes, this film was rated R because of its crude and sexual content and pervasive language.

Mary Steenburgen and Jenkins develop a nice balance to the outlandishness of the emotionally stunted kids while Adam Scott is appropriately Snooty as benze overachieving brother, Derek. Among the supporting players, Catherine is a show stopper as Derek’s emotionally stunted but creatively libidinous wife.

Andrea also does a very nice job in extending the supporting role as a therapist for Brennan. Ferrel is stereotypical here but that should come as no surprise because he has proven himself time and again to handle the man-child role and he does not experiment with step brothers and stays in his comfort zone.

Stepbrothers are one of those films that are impossible to rate highly but impossible to not recommend. I talked from a purely critical perspective, the film is funny but flawed.

However, from the perspective of a person who really loves comedy, step brothers are filled with holiday fun, lots of love, and positive vibes that even though it’s not the director’s best it is still a good time for your family.

The film however serves as the perfect antidote to all the heavy films that you might come across on Netflix nowadays and it will make you laugh and be thankful that the people in the film aren’t your family.
