Life Skills Everyone Should Possess

Life skills, to put it simply, are required for people to live their lives with ease and be self-sufficient. It is also termed as psychosocial competency.

In today’s day and age, being self-sufficient is extremely important. Here are some skills that we think everyone needs to learn to be independent in life.

Cooking

This life skill will help you save money and stay healthy in the long run. However, ordering from restaurants or eating frozen food every day will ultimately prove to be a significant strain on your bank account, and your body may also grow weaker.

Cleaning & Laundry

These are two of the essential skills that many people have no idea how to do. Knowing how to clean and do the dishes is extremely vital, as we saw last year. Laundry, too, isn’t just about popping clothes in a washing machine but knowing how to sort, dry, and fold them as well

Basic Social Skills (+ Good Communication)

Everyone needs to communicate, even if you’re asocial. Whether it’s to buy something or apply for a job, social skills are vital. Without proper communication skills, there’s also a high possibility of constant misunderstandings and needless arguments. Good social skills are also said to help you with higher self-esteem and get further ahead in your career.

Finance Management

This is pretty self-explanatory. Budgeting and keeping a note of your expenses and income is critical if you wish to have some savings. Spend only a percentage of your paycheck and put the rest into a savings account for a rainy day.

Basic DIY

Basic DIY skills like sewing, woodwork, electrical skills, etc., will help you save a lot of money, and you won’t have to rely on anyone to do the job for you! No need to be an expert in everything, but sewing on a button or hammering a nail is a pretty simple task that can be learned with a quick Youtube tutorial.

Self Defense

No need to be a professional martial artist or own a gun to know self-defense. Just knowing a few tips and tricks would do, like how to get out of a headlock or always to keep a bat handy. Of course, it also helps to always carry essential pocket items like pepper spray and a Swiss Army (or any) knife or keys.

Empathy and Self-Awareness

These skills, combined, can help combat drug addiction, reduce stress, and promote a more robust understanding of others. Empathy allows us to understand other people better, while self-awareness lets us reflect on our actions and hold ourselves accountable in certain situations. Self-awareness can be achieved by re-visiting our day’s activities, and empathy should be practiced by watching, listening to people, and reading their body language.
