Gokusen (2004)

“Gokusen” features Kumiko Yamaguchi, a yakuza boss’ granddaughter, who joins an all-boys high school as a teacher. Yankumi’s existence as a female gangster is radical in itself. As a female protagonist, her existence is not defined by her beauty.

At every turn, this josei anime commits to defying gendered expectations, with Yankumi proudly exhibiting both her femininity and gangster traits.

Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler (2017—2019)

Gambling prodigy Yumeko Jabami joins a prestigious school run by gamblers and proceeds to upturn the system. Though “Kakegurui” often succumbs to the sexualization of its characters, it is a female-centric anime that shows off the girls’ wit and energy in a fun and gruesome ways, making it the ultimate power fantasy watch for female viewers.

Wonder Egg Priority (2021)

Protagonist Ai Ohto, after the suicide of her best friend, finds herself drawn in by a mysterious entity to purchase a “wonder egg.” As the series proceeds, it discusses important themes such as sexual assault, sexuality, and gender confusion, making it the best anime series ever for female audiences. 

Jujutsu Kaisen Anime Series (2020)

Toradora! (2008—2009)
